Deuba attributes Maoist problem to poverty

Kathmandu, June 11: Ex-prime minister and convenor of the Maoist problem resolution high level committee Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that despondency is growing among the people due to political instability.

Inaugurating a colloquium on” Security perception of Nepal and democracy” organized by Political Science Association of Nepal (POLSAN) here today, Mr Deuba said greed for power has led to political instability.

Attributing the Maoist problem to rampant poverty, unemployment and social discrimination, he stressed the need to do away with all these problems.

CPN-UML MP Pradip Gyawali spoke of the need to promote national unity so as to preserve nationalism.

MP Rajeshwor Devkota described the Maoist problem as a political problem and said that the problem should be solved politically.

RPP general secretary Pashupati Shumsher J. B. Rana accused the government of failing to maintain law and order in the country, while MP Navaraj Subedi called for a collective effort to foil any attempt to undermine Nepal’s nationalism and national identity.

Samyukta Janamorcha MP Lilamani Pokhrel, Hiranya Lal Shrestha of CPN-ML, human right activist Rishikesh Shaha and others also expressed their views.

Polsan president Dr. Suman Dhakal presided.

Meanwhile, former prime minister Deuba has said that all segments of society including His Majesty’s Government should undertake research on astrology and its protection as this stands as an ancient science for the Hindu Kingdom Nepal.

He was speaking at a national astrology conference organised by Kathmandu Astrology Research Centre here today.

On the occasion, former prime minister Deuba bestowed renown astrologer Dr. Radhakrishna Shreemali with honours by wrapping a shawl around him.

Dr. Shreemali who was born at Jodhapur, India in 1939 is a master of ten sciences including architecture and astrology.

During the function, Royal Nepal Calendar Determination Committee chairman Dr. Mangal Raj Joshi and World Hindu Federation chairman Narayan Pokharel extolled his contribution in astrology and called to undertake further research work.

Kathmandu Astrology Research Centre chairman Harihar Prasad Bhandari was on the  chair.
