Capital market remains still slack

Kathmandu, June 3: The impact of budget estimates for the fiscal year 2000-2001, announced Tuesday on the capital market remained almost insignificant. It failed generate upsurge in the capital market. On the basis of transaction the capital market this week was rather slack. A total of 33,565 shares equivalent to Rs. 203,45 621/- were traded throughout the weekend. The number of transaction was 605. While out of 608 transactions, almost 87120 shares amounting Rs. 252,28879/- were traded in the previous week. On the volume of transaction Bank of Kathmandu still ahead of other companies. A total of 4090 shares belong to the Bank of Kathmandu that was equivalent to Rs 35,66550/- were traded.

According to the NEPSE weekly bulletin, around 113 shares of different companies purchased each day, while the number of shares sold was around 17 each day. The NEPSE index has declined by 1.36 at the closing hour of the weekend. The NEPSE index stood at 344.09 in the beginning while declined to 342.73 at the end. The Commercial banks in the index shifted to 368.59 from 370.68, while manufacturing and productive sector in the index shifted to 341.76 from 341.41. Similarly the hotel sector in the NEPSE index has remained in 355.38

In group-wise transaction, commercial banks have occupied 86.63 per cent in the total transaction both in terms of amount and the volume of shares traded. Finance sector stands at the second position with the 6.21 occupancy in the total transaction volume. Similarly insurance sector is in the third position with 5.01 per cent in the total transaction. However, the trade sector registers no transaction in the weekend. Hotel sector registers hardly 1.52 per cent in the total pie of the transaction. On the basis of number of transaction, Nepal Bangladesh Bank stand in the highest position with the record transaction of 94. In terms of the amount Bangladesh Bank records the transaction of Rs. 22,82,340/- However, the transaction of Bank of Kathmandu, records highest.

National Life and General Insurance Co. (6000/10) had only one transaction in the weekend.

Around 100 transactions took place throughout the weekend. According to NEPSE, companies transaction in the weekend are Nepal Bank Ltd. (Rs 335-320), Nepal Grindlays Bank (Rs.1950-1945), Nepal SBI Bank Ltd (Rs.1100-1090), Nepal Bangladesh Bank( Rs1365-1331) Everest Bank Ltd ( Rs. 845-849), Bank of Kathmandu (Rs.880-875), Tara Gaun (Rs 175-177), Everest Insurance Co (Rs.425-426), Universal Finance and Capital Market (Rs 155). Companies having four day transaction are Nepal Arab Bank (Rs.1265-1260), United Insurance Co. (Rs.250-251) Premier Insurance Co. (Rs 245-250) and Kathmandu Finance (Rs 245-250).

Out of 46 companies registered only 32 of them were in the NEPSE’s trading floor. Financial experts are of the view that transaction in the capital market will improve with the beginning of the new fiscal year. The government has taken various measures to revitalise various sectors including banking, revenue administration, money market, hotel sector, tourism and business.
