BIRGUNJ, Aug 27 – District Election Office, Parsa has recently cancelled a total of 637 applications of the Indian nationals seeking voting rights in Nepal, according to the Parsa district administration.
The decision to this effect is also applied to those who had cast votes in the previous local and general elections.
The Election Office has been updating the voters list since the beginning of the new year as per the general rules of the Election Commission.
Of the total 1,831 cases registered at the Election Office from all the four Constituencies of the district, 637 applications were found to be ineligible for claiming the voting rights in Nepal, according to the decision of Chief District Officer of Parasa Dolakh Bahadur Gurung.
Similarly, names of another 698 persons were also removed from the voters list as they were found to have double-registered and the other were ineligible because of their age.
Some of the prominent businessmen are also among those whose names have been omitted from the franchise rights in Nepal.
The largest number of petitions were filed at the Election Office from Ward No. 8, 11, 13 and 16 of Birgunj Sub-Metropolis, Parsa District Election Official Sahadev Rayamajhi said.
Rayamajhi revealed that about 90 per cent of the applicants did not turn up at the office to defend their cases following the petitions filed against their nationality.
