The Home Ministry Tuesday said altogether 43 persons have been taken under security control in the Kathmandu Valley. Among them, 18 have been placed under house arrest.

In a statement today, the ministry said the detentions and house arrests were enforced under the Public Security Act in view of the difficult security situation in the country.

The ministry, however, did not disclose the names and the whereabouts of the persons detained and those under house arrest while the total number of people under security control around the country remains unclear.

Separately, in an interview with the state-owned Radio Nepal, Royal Nepalese Army spokesman Brigadier General Deepak Gurung said the number of people taken under control could be “40 or so” while he gave no details of the situation citing difficulties due to communication lapse in previous days.

A number of top leaders of political parties were placed under house arrest immediately after the royal proclamation of February 1.
