KATHMANDU: Altogether 185 prisoners were released from prisons nation-wide after their remaining sentences were commuted to mark Constitution Day Thursday, the Department of Prison Management said. King Gyanendra said in a message: “Our benevolent brother’s steadfast commitment to the constitution is there for all to see and remains an example for all of us. The behaviour and actions of every citizen, as well as institutions, must conform to constitutional norms and values if democracy is to prosper.”
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said consolidation of constitutional monarchy and multi-party democracy alone will ensure the larger interest of Nepal and Nepalis. “The constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal is a reflection of this reality. Nepalese society should be democratized through this constitution striving at the same time for the country’s social and economic transformation,” he said. Nepal’s present democratic constitution was promulgated 11 years ago. The day was marked as a national holiday.
