Kathmandu, Jan. 1 : Seventeen MPs of the Nepali Congress have published a press statement here today heartily appealing to all Nepalese brothers and sisters living in the hills and the plains not to disrupt, at any cost, the social and regional harmony based on peace and tolerance that has existed since the beginning of history.

The statement says, “the distinct characteristic of Nepali society based on a blooming and colourful garden of four castes and 36 sub-castes is communal harmony, and we all should be committed to sustaining it for ever.”

Stating that the time had come for one and all in the country to be alert against elements daring to introduce instability into the country, an appeal has been made not to be swayed by what others say but instead observe restraint so as to maintain peace and harmony in society.

Stating that if we do not observe restraint our activities will turn out to be irresponsible, it will not be advantageous to anyone barring disruptive and terrorist elements and we will become the target of those conspirators whether we like it or not, the statement appeals to all brothers and sisters to wake up to the conspiracy being hatched against the nation and democracy and to maintain mutual unity and harmony.

We have been seriously concerned over the incidents of violence spreading in the Terai districts on account of the excitement and anguish generated by an unsubstantiated statement by an Indian cine artiste, the investigation commission constituted by the government will definitely look into attempts made towards disrupting social harmony in the streets of Kathmandu and seeking to unleash violent activities against Terai people, and the culprits will be prosecuted, the statement says adding that the outbreaking of further violence in the Terai region on some pretext or other has further increased our sorrow.

In the statement, a demand has been made with the government to provide compensation for loss of life and property and make provisions for the medical treatment of the injured.

The MPs signing the statement are Mahendra Kumar Raya, Ram Chandra Tiwari, Ram Kumar Chaudhari, Ananda Prasad Dhungana, Amiya Kumar Yadav, Hari Prasad Sapkota, Formullah Mansoor, Smriti Narayan Chaudhari, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Prakash Koirala, Birendra Kanaudiya, Kailash Nath Kasaudhan Gupta, Mrs Kashi Paudel, Khem Raj Bhatta Mayalu, Pushkar Nath Ojha and Ram Janam Chaudhari.
