16 Ruling Party Workers Expelled

Kathmandu, Nov.12: Sixteen members of the ruling Nepali Congress were expelled from the general membership of the party for three years after an election brawl injuring an election observer, the central committee of the party said.

District president of Saptari Dinesh  Kumar Yadav was among those expelled on orders of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and party president.Election observer Gopal Kattel was injured in the brawl Thursday. The party acted on a complaint by Nagendra Jha. Rival groups of the ruling party clashed in a dispute over the forthcoming general convention to elect a new president.

Critics allege Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and his coterie are manipulating voters’ list to influence the vote. Koirala, Sher Bahadur Deuba and Shailja Acharya have declared their candidacy for the presidential elections in January.
