Vehicular movement at a standstill

There has been no vehicular movement to and from the capital, Kathmandu on Thursday, traffic police said.

Speaking to Nepalnews, traffic police officials stationed at the Thankot traffic police post informed that only a few vehicles entered Kathmandu before 4 a.m. today. “The road is deserted with no vehicles plying along the highway,” a traffic police official said. Thankot is the main entry/exit point of Kathmandu.

According to reports, the Maoists on Tuesday issued a press release stating that they had announced indefinite blockades with effect from Thursday on different sections of the Prithvi, Mahendra and Tribhuvan highways. Moreover, the Maoists have imposed blockades in Gaur, Rautahat, Parsa, Bara, Sindhupalchowk, Kanchanpur, Dhading, Sindhuli and Chitwan, the lastest reports said.

The Maoists declared blockades in Sunachuri-Hetaunda section of the Mahendra highway, Naagdhunga-Benighat section of the Prithvi highway and Naubise-Bhaise section of the Tribhuvan highway.

Meanwhile, the Maoists have also disrupted vehicular movement along the Araniko highway. “The vehicles are not allowed past Dhulikhel,” police informed. Araniko highway links Kathmandu with the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet.
