Participants at a workshop of the United Nations Drug Control Programme (UNDCP) and representatives of SAARC have asked seven member nations of the regional organization to enact legislation for the regulation and control of precursor chemicals in South Asia.
Participants also asked the UNDCP to “assist the governments concerned in drawing up the necessary legislation at their request,” a news release of SAARC headquarters said Monday. The two-day meeting concluded Saturday.
The meeting recommended seven member states examine feasibility of mutually sharing relevant data, information and documentation on activities involving precursor diversion for investigative and judicial process.
The importance of mutual legal assistance as provided for in the SAARC Convention on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances of 1990 was also re-emphasized.
