UML, the main opposition in parliament, said Wednesday it opposes Nepal’s participation in the U.S. led grand coalition against terrorism by permitting Washington the use of Nepali airspace and territory.
“We should not turn a blind eye to the possibilities of grave fallout by abandoning our tradition of non-alignment and the five principles of Panchasheel. It is our country’s policy not to allow its territory for hostile activities against other countries,” a press statement said.
The party expressed its “deep difference” with the government’s move. The party also flayed the government of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba for not forging a consensus with the opposition on the issue.
Earlier nine left parties also opposed the government move. But the party strongly condemned the September 11 terrorist attacks in Washington and New York.
