Two helicopters supplied by the British Government will arrive “shortly” to join a fleet of the Royal Nepalese Army but they will not be used in “attack and combat roles,” the British Embassy said Monday.
“The agreement between the British Government and the Royal Nepalese Army restricts the use of the helicopters to logistical, medical and humanitarian purposes only. The helicopters will not be used in attack and combat roles,” the Embassy said.
The British Government earlier allocated 6.5 million pounds sterling equivalent to Rs.700 million for conflict prevention initiative. “The conflict prevention initiative is part of the British Government’s continuing commitment to assisting the government and the people of Nepal in resolving the conflict in the country,” the Embassy said.
The Embassy was reacting to a newspaper report Monday that London was supplying Nepal with attack Russian MI-17 helicopters to quell a Maoist rebellion in the kingdom.
