Kathmandu: The Valley Traffic Police Office is organising a “Traffic Week 2002” along with various educational programmes starting June 9 with the objective of raising awareness among the general public about traffic rules.
As part of the week-long programme, pedestrians, motorists from public transportation and others will be involved and they will be imparted knowledge about traffic rules.
Similarly, it is learnt that training in traffic rules will be imparted to students of various schools and some 11,000 school children will be involved.
Besides the national cadet corps, social and volunteer institutions like Nepal Scouts, the Jaycees, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, the Lazimpat Club and community service centres will also be involved in the programme.
Programmes like street plays, special radio programmes, interactions and school visit programmes will be organised .
Addressing a press conference organised by the Valley Traffic Police Office here today, senior superintendent of police Man Bahadur Rawal underlined the need for strict adherence to traffic rules in order to prevent and reduce the number of road accidents.
Out of the total 330,000 various kinds of registered vehicles in Nepal, 184,000 are concentrated in Kathmandu Valley .
It is learnt that some 200 people die annually in road accidents in Nepal.
