Minister for Home and Local Development Khum Bahadur Khadka said recently that the tenure of the peoples’ representatives in different local bodies would not be extended.

Speaking to the Pokhara based correspondent of Gorkhapatra daily, Minister Khadka said why should the government extend the tenure of the local bodies when their tenure has come to an end.

Asked whether political appointments would be made in the posts made vacant after the terms of the present office bearers were not extended, Khadka said discussions were being held with the Election Commission regarding the same.

“We could make political appointments and we could as well skip the idea,” Khadka said.

The main opposition party in the dissolved House of Representatives, CPN (UML) has been demanding that the government extend the tenure of the local bodies by one year.

The provisions in the Constitution has stated that the tenure of the local bodies can be extended if their tenure cannot be extended due to a special reason. nepalnews.com am July 13
