Speaking at a meeting organised by the Civic Network for Democracy, Human Rights and Peace in Janakpur on Saturday, rights activist Krishna Pahadi said, “The Maoists must refrain from killing anybody on any pretence.”

Pahadi’s comment comes after Maoists announced various programmes to disrupt municipal poll slated for February 8 next year.

Urging the Maoists to withdraw the protests aimed at disrupting the elections, Pahadi said, “There is no need for the Maoists to resort to violence as the programmes of the agitating parties are enough to disrupt the elections.”

Terming the elections a sham, Pahadi said, “They are being conducted with the objective of giving continuity to autocracy.”

Accusing the government of trying to provoke war at a time when the Maoists are seeking a peaceful solution, Pahadi said, “Only those who see their future protected in war want to wage war.”

Maoists announced protest program coinciding with the municipal polls. The Maoists also warned that ‘people’s actions’ will be taken from January 26, which will include ‘special action’ against candidates and officials engaged in the municipal elections.
