NHRC meets Cabinet vice-chairman Dr Tulsi Giri, discusses rights situation of the country

A delegation of National Human Rights Commission met with Cabinet Vice-Chairman Dr Tulsi Giri at the latter’s office today to pressurize the government to reciprocate the unilateral ceasefire announced by the Maoists and to discuss the situation of Human Rights in the country.

The delegation led by Chairman of the Commission also expressed concern over not implementing the reports submitted by the Commission and asked the government not to interfere in the activities of the commission.

Addressing the delegation, Dr Giri expressed the government’s commitment to cooperate in the Commission’s free, impartial and effective activities.

According to a press statement issued by the Commission, the delegation included members of the Commission Sushila Singh Silu, Sudip Pathak, Gokul Pokhrel, Dr Ram Dayal Rakesh and acting secretary Kedar Prasad Poudel.

Earlier the NHRC had sent a letter to the government on September 15, urging it to respond the Maoist’s unilateral cease-fire and adopt maximum flexibility to transform the three-month long unilateral ceasefire into the sustainable peace.

The Maoists announced cease-fire on September 3 with immediate effect.

The NHRC also held separate meetings with Nepali Congress (NC) president Girija Prasad Koirala, Rastriya Janashakti Party president Surya Bahadur Thapa, Rastriya Prajatantra Party president Pashupati Shumsher Rana and Chairperson of the NC (Democratic) former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in a bid to transform the ceasefire into sustainable peace in the country.
