Biatnagar, June 23: His Majesty’s Government, National Planning Commission secretariat, the Central Bureau of Statistics, the Gender Equality Streamlining Programme and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) organized a regional seminar on “The National Census-2001” here the other day.
Altogether 40 persons representing the central bureau of statistics and the Morang, Sunsari, Dhankuta, Okhaldhunga, Udayapur, Panchthar and Bhojpur district branch offices, the Morang district administration office, the district education office, the district public health office, the district police office, Biratnagar Municipality, the regional agriculture directorate, Nepal Rastra Bank and the district treasury office took part in the seminar.
The seminar was organized with the objective of familiarizing and informing the concerned offices and departments about the subject matter and the scope of the National Population Census-2001.
On the occasion, deputy director of the Central Bureau of Statistics Badri Niraula presented a working paper on “preparation and the procedures of national census-2001″. In his working paper Niraula has highlighted the significance of the national population census in the economic planning of the country.
Similarly, officer of the Central Bureau of Statistics Ritu Pantha, presenting a working paper on ” the census methods and the techniques to be followed for the national
Census-2001″, said that this census would be different from the previous national censuses in that it would incorporate various new topics related to women empowerment and gender.
Participants of the seminar stressed that since the census was directly related with the country’s overall development and the livelihood of the people, it should represent the true picture of the population status and should be objective and reliable.
It is said that the national population census which will be formally taken in 2001 employs a special two-way entry system of data recording.
The first population census in Nepal was conducted some 90 years ago in 1910.
