Immigration and security authorities at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) stopped former Chief of the Army Staffs (COAS) Pyar Jung Thapa from boarding a flight to Doha of Qatar Sunday morning.
Thapa had reached the ariport along with his wife at around 8:30 am to board his flight, but the immigration and police officials stopped him saying that they had received orders from higher authority not to allow him to leave the country. He returned home without saying a word.
The Home Ministry and the police headquarters are learnt to have ordered the airport authorities to stop him on the request of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).
The former army chief has been accused of misuse of funds and his authority to suppress the people’s movement last year. The CIAA has already interrogated him on these charges.
Thapa is one of those who have been recommended action in the Rayamajhi commission report.
The government has already decided to restrict all the accused persons from going abroad.
