The issue of Constituent Assembly, one of the main demands of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) is being tabled for discussion at the ongoing seventh general convention of the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist Leninist) with divided opinions on whether to take it up as a permanent remedy to the present political problem or treat it in the form of an alternative.

A total of sixteen hundred representatives are taking part in the convention being held in the historic city of Janakpur. Outgoing General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal is against the Constituent assembly while other leaders namely K.P. Sharma Oli, Bamdev Gautam and Shankhar Pokhrel are in support of the constituent assembly.

Nepal has been claiming that the Maoists have not yet clearly stated the modalities of going about to elect the constituent assembly. Senior leader of the party K.P. Sharma Oli presented a political report that brought forward views different than that of outgoing General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal.

Oli has told the media after the closed session Sunday that he was not for splitting the party regardless of the differences he had with Nepal.
