Nepal-US military holds joint drill Published on: February 11, 2019

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Army and US Army are organizing a joint military training at the upper area of Mustang district, near the Chinese border. Military personnel from Mahavir Battalion (Ranger) of the Nepal Army and the US Army are taking part in the joint military training under the Indo-Pacific Command, according to NA source.

A total of 48 military personnel, including seven from the US Amy, are taking part in the three-week-long military exercise that will conclude next week.

The US Embassy in Kathmandu has stated that these types of joint military exercises will help in strengthening the military and friendly ties between the two countries along with the exchange and development of defense skill and knowledge.

Issue of citizenship in Tarai to be resolved soon: Chair Dahal Published on: February 11, 2019

LAHAN: Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that the issue of the citizenship in Tarai will be resolved soon.

Speaking while inaugurating the newly constructed health post building in Arnama Rural Municipality of the district on Monday, Dahal said that the bill related to the citizenship act would facilitate the genuine citizen to receive the citizenship of Nepal.

Likewise, in another context, leader Dahal reiterated that the government is committed to address the need of the people of Tarai and to amend the constitution to meet the genuine demands of the people in the region.

Leader Dahal revealed that the government has allotted a  package worth Rs 2 billion for the infrastructure development in the region targeting the people of the region, marginalized and underprivileged group in particular.

Nepal participates in TTF Chennai, 2019 Published on: February 11, 2019

KATHMANDU: Nepal has participated in the Travel and Tourism Fair (TTF), Chennai 2019 as part of the tourism campaign efforts.

Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) along with thirteen private companies promoted and highlighted Nepal in the three-day TTF that concluded on Sunday.

According to NTB, the TTF Chennai edition concluded with productive participation of 125 exhibitors from eight countries, 19 Indian States and Union territories.

Around 6,000 visitors visited the fair in which Nepal is a partner country. Visitors from Goa, Andra Pradesh, Himanchal Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhanda, Odisa, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and the host state Tamil Nadu took part in the show, NTB stated.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that Nepal welcomed 1,273,072 visitors in 2018. This means that India alone contributed 17.8 percent of the total number of arrival.

Nepal Pavilion attracted a lot of visitors in the fair. Visitors eagerly showed interest about Kailashnath and Muktinath temples.

Press Council lists out five media as disobedient Published on: February 11, 2019

KATHMANDU: The Press Council Nepal has enlisted five media as disobedient for violating code of conduct. Upon the complaint lodged by the victims for publishing baseless news, defamation or violating journalist code of conduct in different ways, the Council had sought a clarification from  ‘Weeky Rajdhani Astha’, ‘Nada times weekly (Kaski, later named Nada express), “Swaraj Weekly’, ‘Fast times daily (Sunsari) and Gorkhapatra daily (Kathmandu).

The media, however, ignored the approach from the council and have been enlisted in the category of disobedient as per article 7 of the Journalist Code of Conduct, 2016. This article facilitates the Council to list any media as disobedient and making public the details of the action taken for condemning the journalist or media house ignoring the decision or directives of the Council.

Massive fire engulfs store belonging to Yeti Carpet Published on: February 11, 2019

KATHMANDU: A massive fire has engulfed a store belonging to Yeti Carpet at Bhainsepati, Lalitpur.
The fire that started at around 1 pm on Monday afternoon has damaged around Rs 40 million assets, according to the police.

Four fire engines and five water tanks were involved in controlling the blaze. The reason for the incident is still unknown and the investigation is underway, according to the police. The company has stored a large number of carpets and mattresses.

NSU President Mahar steps down Published on: February 11, 2019

KATHMANDU: President of Nepal Students Union, a student wing of the main opposition Nepali Congress, Nainsingh Mahar, has tendered his resignation from his post on Monday.

Mahar tendered his resignation at the central committee meeting of the Nepali Congress saying that he could not conduct the long overdue NSU elections.

NC had heaped pressure on Mahar, asking him to pave the way for the formation of an ad-hoc committee in the students’ organization. The party is preparing to form an ad-hoc committee of the NSU through a meeting.

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has warned against the tendency of mugging of the state coffers and obstructing the country’s development.

Addressing the 69th Democracy Day Program Main Committee meet at the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) today, PM Oli expressed concern over activities that are prevalent to creating confusion among the people.

Reminding the historic people’s movements, he said that the time and responsibility have come to usher the country on the path of good governance and development.

“Democracy has taken the country into a new era. Therefore, we must move ahead as guided by the democratic practices,” he stated.

Climate change a top global threat: survey Published on: February 11, 2019

BERLIN: A survey conducted by the Washington-based Pew Research Center concluded that climate change has been the top security concern in several countries.

According to the survey, Islamist terrorism and cyber-attacks have been listed as other concerns after climate change. In the survey, respondents in a number of countries expressed their worry about the power and influence of the United States, reports said.

The survey said that in 13 of 26 countries, people listed climate change as the top global threat. Likewise, Islamic State militant group topped the list in eight and cyber-attacks in four, according to Reuters.

Finance Committee asks govt to recover due amount from TSP within a month Published on: February 10, 2019

KATHMANDU: The Finance Committee under the federal parliament has directed the government to recover the due amount of Rs 2.96 billion from the telecommunication service providers (TSP).

The meeting of the committee held at Singha Durbar on Sunday has directed the Ministry for Communication and Information Technology and Ministry of Finance to recover the due amount within a month.

Chairperson of the committee, Krishna Prasad Dahal informed that the committee has cautioned the government to suspend the services of the organizations until they pay the due amount. Total nine service providers need to pay due amount of Rs 2,960,085,000 to the government and Nepal Telecommunication Authority. The committee has asked the government to start the scrapping process of those companies if the service providers failed to pay the amount within the stipulated time.

Likewise, the committee has asked the government to initiate to implement the verdict of the Supreme Court on the Capital Gains Case of Ncell at the earliest. The Ministry of Finance had submitted a report to the committee mentioning that Ncell needs to pay Rs 12.73 billion to the government as the due capital gains.

Upper Trishuli 3B project to ensure reliable power supply Published on: February 10, 2019

NUWAKOT: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Barsha Man Pun said Nepal needs to be self-reliant on energy to reduce the current trade loss.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone of the Upper Trishuli 3B at Kispang Rural Municipality in Nuwakot on Sunday, he said the country needs 10,000 MW of electricity to achieve the government’s two-digit economic growths goal.

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and the Nepal Telecommunications Company Limited are the major investors of the project.

Minister Pun said the country currently needs 10,000 megawatts electricity for internal consumption.
On the occasion, Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director Kulman Ghising maintained that the completion of the project would ensure reliable and regular power supply.

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) and the Nepal Telecommunications Company Limited are the major investors of the project.

While the NEA and Nepal Telecom have a 30 percent share each, the remaining investment is shared by others, including the local governments in Rasuwa and Nuwakot, locals, financial institutions, and Telecom employees. The cost of the project has been put at Rs 7.44 billion.
