RUKUM: Police arrested two persons on charges of possessing opium and hashish weighing 12 kg. They are identified as Dhan Bahadur Malla, 42 and Chandra Bahadur Shahi, 30 of Tribeni Nalgad Municipality in Jajarkot district. Police also confiscated cash rs.50,000 from the duo, according to Sumit Khadka, the chief at the District Police Office.
KATHMANDU: Economists and analysts have emphasized on boosting productivity to increase the country’s economy.
Participating at an interaction organized jointly by Khabarhub and Institute for Strategic and Socio-Economic Research at the Pavilion Hall to analyze the government’s performance on economic sector in the last one year in Kathmandu, they suggested the government to address this issue to avoid stagnant economy.
Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Prakash Saran Mahat said the government’s performance on economic sector has been discouraging. He said people’s aspirations have been shattered since the government failed to attract foreign investment in the country. “Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been decreased by 50 percent,” Dr. Mahat said citing available data.
He criticized the government for failing to control the price hike, control corruption, and failing to create employment opportunities despite assurances and publicity.
“The entire scenario is negative,” he said citing the country’s trade deficit with other countries.
Analyst Bharat Dahal queried as what is barring the government from bringing in foreign investment. He termed the government’s performance as ‘dissatisfactory’ in all sectors.
Advisor to the Ministry of Finance, Dr. Ram Saran Kharel, however, defended the government saying that the foundation has been created for sustainable economic growth in the last one year. “Tax system has been made progressive,” he said adding, “There is no point to be disappointed.”
Dr. Dwarika Thapa expressed mixed reactions over the government’s performance in the economic sector saying that it would be too early to judge the government. He, however, suggested the government towards working to carry out tasks that would increase the country’s economy.
Likewise, stating that the government has brought some encouraging programs such as the Prime Minister Employment Program and Social Security Scheme, Dr. Govinda Bahadur Thapa said the government should work towards increasing the productivity, and bring out some programs that will have direct impact on the people. “Increasing the tax rate is not the need of the hour,” he maintained.
KANCHANPUR: A mother and her 14-year-old son were injured when a lightning struck their house Friday morning at Parifanta of Shuklaphanta municipality-8, Kanchanpur, police said.
According to the police, Gaura Khatri and her son are being treated at a medical facility. Both mother and son are out of danger, police said citing the hospital source.
Commissioner at the Commission for the Investment of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Raj Narayan Pathak, has resigned on Friday.
He has submitted his resignation to the President. Pathak has been allegedly involved in taking a bribe of Rs 75 lakh from the Nepal Engineering College assuring the college management of settling a land dispute.
Pathak stepped down following pressure from the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP), which had on Thursday warned of registering an impeachment motion against him if he did not tender his resignation by today.
A video was publicized where Pathak was taking bribe from Lambodhar Neupane, chairperson of the College Management Committee, some five months ago.
POKHARA: Coordinator of Naya Shakti Nepal Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has lambasted the government of failing to take headways as per the people’s aspirations.
Speaking at a program in Pokhara, former Prime Minister Dr. Bhattarai said the government’s pace is generic and sluggish. “Though the government was supposed to take giant leaps in development, it failed to do so,” he stated.
Dr. Bhattarai also came dwon heavily on the government for failing to carry out concrete work to consolidate the country’s economy. He raised concern over the increased poverty and unemployment in the country.
KANCHANPUR: Kanchanpur police recovered 5.6 kilogram gold from a cowshed at Amarpur in Shukhlaphanta of Kanchanpur this morning.
A joint team of Area Police Office, Jhalari, and Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) seized the gold from the cowshed of Suraj Tiruwa at 1:00 am. Police said the gold was buried in a pit in the cowshed.
The confiscated gold has been kept at the Kanchanpur District Police Office. The police had on Thursday had confiscated 18 kg gold from Punarbas Municipality-2 in Kanchanpur district.
KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has condemned the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that killed around 40 personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force on Thursday.
PM Oli telephoned Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and condemned the attack. He also tweeted saying that he conveyed ‘our heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims’.
Likewise, the government has strongly condemned the terrorist attack that resulted in the loss of many lives.
A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government extends heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and the Government and people of India.
It said that Nepal unequivocally condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
The statement further stated that Nepal believes that such heinous acts of terrorism cannot be justified on any ground.
SINDHULI: Two houses have been destroyed in a fire that broke out after a solar panel explosion at Tinpatan Rural Municipality-6 in Sindhuli district. Two houses of Purna Bahadur Bhujel were fully destroyed in the fire that occurred on Thursday, police confirmed.
According to District Police Office, Sindhuli, the houses were gutted in fire after the solar battery of 12 volt exploded following a short circuit. Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sindhuli Chakra Bahadur Singh said that properties worth Rs 560,000 plus gutted to cinder in the fire.
Meanwhile, an elderly got serious burn injuries while attempting to douse fire forest in Dhapre in the same municipality. Amrita Darji, 60, was caught with the fire. SP Singh said that he is rushed to Dhulikhel Hospital for further treatment as her medical treatment in Sindhuli Hospital was not likely.
Terrorists attacked a convoy of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) killing at least 44 of them in Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district Thursday evening, agencies said.
Reports said Pakistan-based terror outfit, the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), claimed responsibility for the terror attack. Security forces said the terrorists used an improvised explosive device (IED) in the attack.
A total of 2,500 CRPF personnel were going in a convoy of 78 vehicles from Jammu to Srinagar when they were attacked by terrorists, reports said.
