Passengers left high and dry as landslide obstructs Karnali Highway Published on: April 7, 2019

SURKHET: Various sections of the Karnali highway have been obstructed due to floods and landslides triggered by heavy rain and hailstorm on Saturday night.

The road was obstructed at Dahikhola in between Dullu municipality of Dailekh and Subhakalika rural municipality of Kalikot. As a result, passengers going to Karnali from Kathmandu, Nepalgunj and Surkhet have been stranded.

Sporadic rainfall and continuous landslide have made the effort to clear the road difficult, said Chief District Officer Chandra Bahadur Karki.

SURKHET: The Karnali State government on Saturday announced to provide Rs 10 million in relief to the storm survivors of Bara and Parsa districts.

The State Cabinet meeting today decided to provide relief assistance of Rs 10 million for the rehabilitation of victims in the storm-ravaged districts.

 

 

Abandoned British national Philips Malcolm dies Published on: April 6, 2019

KATHMANDU: An abandoned British national Philips Malcolm died while receiving treatment at the Thapathali-based Norvic Hospital on Saturday. A doctor at the hospital confirmed his death. Malcolm breathed his last after his blood circulation dropped and he faced difficulty in breathing, according to the doctor.

Earlier he was left high and dry at the Emergency Ward of Bir Hospital. After Khabarhub carried out a news about the British national languishing at the hospital, a team of youths had taken him to Kathmandu Medical College and then to Norvic Hospital.

During a conversation with Khabarhub, Malcolm had expressed his desire to die in his own country which remained unfulfilled.

Malcolm was first admitted to the Teku-based Sukraraj Tropical & Infectious Disease Hospital some two weeks ago where he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C.

46 teams granted climbing permits for spring season so far Published on: April 6, 2019

KATHMANDU: As of Friday, a total of 46 expedition teams have been granted mountain climbing permits for this spring, according to the Department of Tourism.

The government has collected over Rs 255.6 million through the permits.

The teams receiving the climbing permits comprise 193 members. Of the collected revenue, Rs 240 million is collected from the mountaineering teams climbing the Mount Everest. As many as 19 teams are attempting to scale the world’s highest peak this time.

According to the Department, aspiring climbers have started flocking the destinations. Four expeditions are attempting each for climbing the Kanchenjunga and Lhotse peaks and two are each for the Annapurna and Ama Dablam, Department’s mountaineering section’s Nayab Subba Rameshwor Niruala said.

Permits have been given to two groups each for climbing Makalu, Nuptse and Gyalzen peaks.

The government has presently opened 415 mountain peaks for climbing and there are still over 1,300 mountains suitable for climbing.

One killed, 3 injured in lightning strike Published on: April 6, 2019

KATHMANDU: Prakash Raut, a resident of Jamirgadi, Mechinagar Municipality-15, Jhapa, died from the lightning that occurred on Saturday morning.

Similarly, Sunita Raut, Manju Raut of the same municipality and Sumitra Bhattarai of Rupakot Majhuwagadi Municipality-1 of Khotang were injured in the incident.

They are receiving treatment at local hospitals, the National Emergency Operation Centre informed.

 

Traffic police take action against footpath encroachment Published on: April 6, 2019

KATHMANDU: Traffic police are all set to act against the encroachment on road pavements inside the Kathmandu Valley.

The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division is intervening to prevent the pavement encroachment under the recently implemented ‘traffic management and pollution control improvement action plan-2075’.

In collaboration with several bodies/organizations, footpath shops and parking lots remaining along the Old Baneshwor –Sinagmangal; Pinglasthan-Gaushala Chowk; around the Koteshwor; New Baneshwor- Old Baneshwor; Tripureshwor- Kalanki; Chabahil- Jorpati; and Thapathali-Lagankhel routes will be removed.

According to Division’s senior superintendent of police, Basanta Kumar Panta, the campaign which has been in force since April 4 aims to make the traffic system efficient and well-managed.

 

‘Tornado’ hit Nepal for the first time in history Published on: April 6, 2019

KATHMANDU: Weather experts have said that the deadly windstorm that lashed at Bara and Parsa on last Sunday was ‘tornado’, Gorkhapatra daily highlighted.

According to an investigation carried out by a team led by Madan Lal Shrestha, senior meteorologist and professor at Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the devastating wind was ‘tornado’ that devastated Bara and Parsa of Province 2 on last Sunday.

Shrestha is the former Director General of Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD). Shrestha has been working in his capacity as the professor at NAST after having worked as a meteorologist for 46 years.

“A tornado is a violent storm that rotates down in contact with both the surface of the earth and a cumulonimbus cloud,” said Shrestha, adding, “It destroys whatever comes in its contact.”

The violent storm in Bara, as he described, blew away infrastructures including houses, uprooted trees, vehicles and pulled down electric poles, leaving 27 people dead and over 600 injuries injured.

 

 

 

 

 

603 receive citizenship in Doti Published on: April 6, 2019

DOTI: A total of 603 people have received the citizenship certificates at the Adarsha rural municipality in the district.

Tek Bahadur Rokaya, chairman of the rural municipality said that 624 people obtained the voter’s identity cards from the camp while 68 were rendered the health services, 934 the agriculture-related services and 448 visited the camp for the livestock services.

On the same occasion, 244 students of the Sharada Secondary School, Mauwa were awarded the scholarship. According to Chief District Officer Yadav Subedi, the camp was held for the convenience of those unable to visit the district headquarters to seek services due to several reasons.

Free transportation service was available for the people of Girichauki of Adarsha rural municipality-6 which is relatively far way than other areas from the location where the camp was organised.

The three-day camp was organised by the District Administration Office, Doti in coordination of the rural municipality.
