KATHMANDU: An unidentified gang has torched a truck at Thaha Municipality-4 in Makwanpur district on early Thursday.
According to police, the group intercepted the truck, Na 5 Kha 7411, in the jungle between Palung and Daman and set it on fire after dousing it in petrol.
Three people including driver were taken out of the truck before it was set ablaze, said police. The cargo truck was heading to Hetauda from Kathmandu.
No one has claimed the responsibility for the arson attack so far.
KATHMANDU: The nationwide band called by Nepal Communist Party led by Netra Bikram Chand aka ‘Biplav’ has had minor impact in the Kathmandu Valley on Thursday.
The images taken by Khabarhub has shown that the effect is minor. No untoward incidents have taken place so far. Vehicles are plying the road as usual since early morning. The situation is normal.
Security personnel – Nepal Police and Armed Police Force – have been deployed at the major junctions of the Kathmandu Valley to preempt any untoward incidents.
Police have claimed to have been able to maintain law and order. “We have tightened security for the safety of the general people. The situation is under our control, SSP Uttam Raj Subedi, spokesperson of the Nepal Police, told Khabarhub.
KATHMANDU: The leaders of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) have been divided over the government’s decision to ban the activities of the Netra Bikram Chand aka Biplav-led Nepal Communist Party.
Even though the government took a decision to this effect in line with the agreement between Prime Minister KP Oli and NCP chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the second-rung leaders are not happy with the decision, a report in Kantipur daily said.
Senior leaders including Madhav Kumar Nepal, Jhala Nath Khanal, Bamdev Gautam and Narayan Kaji Shrestha had discussed this issue with Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday and expressed dissatisfaction saying the decision was taken unilaterally without consulting the party.
Meanwhile, Biplav-led Nepal Communist Party, in a press note, has said that it would not yield to the government and warned of retaliation while Nepal Police Chief Sarbendra Nath Khanal has asserted that the police administration is capable of quelling any kinds of criminal activities.

KATHMANDU: National Assembly (NA) passed the proposal on ‘National Sports Development Bill, 2075’ in its today’s meeting. The proposal was presented by Minister for Youth and Sport, Jagat Bahadur Bishwokarma.
Similarly, President of the Legislation Management Committee, Parshuram Meghi Gurung presented reports of the Citizen Investment Trust (second amendment) Bill, 2075 and the bill on pesticides management, 2075 and the auditing bill, 2075, both received from the House of Representatives with messages.
Likewise, NA’s secretary, Rajendra Phuyal tabled ‘the Special Economic Zone (first amendment) Bill, 2075’ and ‘the Land Use Bill, 2075’, both received from the HoR with messages. The NA will next meet on March 14 at 1 pm.
Kathmandu: Indian Embassy awarded 200 scholarships to Nepali students for the academic year 2018/2019. The scholarships recipients cover 36 undergraduate courses such as: MBBS, BDS, BE, BSc, BBA and B. Com among others and are from 50 districts of Nepal. The students make 45% girls and 8% differently-abled students, according to a press release by the embassy today.
The award known as the Golden Jubilee Scholarships, is presented every year. Under this scholarship scheme, an MBBS/BDS student receives NRs. 4000/- per month for five years, a BE student receives NRs. 4000/- per month for four years, and a student studying in other under-graduate courses receives NRs. 3000/- per month for three years. So far more than 2,350 Nepali students have been awarded the Golden Jubilee Scholarships from across the country.
Khaga Raj Baral, a secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology presented the certificate of merit to 200 students at a program today. Ambassador of India to Nepal, Manjeev Singh Puri congratulated the students and advised them to achieve personal and professional fulfillment contributing towards Nepal’s socio-economic development.
In 2002, the Government of India started the prestigious Golden Jubilee Scholarship Scheme to mark the completion of 50 years of India-Nepal Economic Cooperation. At the inception of this scheme, 50 meritorious Nepali students were awarded the scholarship. In the year 2007, the number of scholarships were increased to 100. Since the year 2012, the numbers of scholarships have been doubled to 200.
The Government of India provides a total of about 3000 scholarships in Medical, Science, Veterinary Sciences, Pharmacology, Dental science, Agriculture, Engineering, Arts, Commerce, Science, Computer Science, Nursing and many other disciplines to study at the universities and colleges in Nepal and in India. These Scholarships are part of India’s efforts to support human resources development in Nepal for the overall socio-economic development of Nepal and Nepali people.
KATHMANDU: The first sitting of the House of Representatives has been postponed today due to the obstruction by the Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) lawmakers.
The RJPN legislators stood up from their respective seats in protest soon after Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara announced the meeting had started.
RJPN leader Raj Kishor Yadav, who made a statement after Speaker Mahara, allotted him time to speak, said that the reply of the Minister for Home Affairs in the earlier meeting of the House of Representatives regarding the report of the commission constituted under the chairmanship of former judge at the Supreme Court, Girish Chandra Lal, regarding the Madhesh and Tharuhat movements was not satisfactory.
Yadav said they would not allow the parliament to hold its meeting until that report was made public. “The government has dilly-dallied on our demand of making the Lal Commission’s report public and taken it lightly,” he charged. The commission was formed for finding out facts behind the incidents that took place in course of the Tharuhat movement in 2015.
Yadav said the report has not been made public by the government fearing that the state character would be exposed if the report was made public. He said that government was involved in giving a bad name to the Madhesh movement by spreading rumor against it.
After Yadav was done with his statement, Speaker Mahara urged the RJPN lawmakers to extend cooperation to continue with the meeting of the house by taking their seats as he has directed the government regarding this topic.
The speaker postponed the first meeting of the house for 10 minutes after the RJPN lawmakers did not oblige to his requests.
KATHMANDU: Naya Shakti Party (NSP) Coordinator Dr Baburam Bhattarai said the decision taken by the government on Nepal Communist Party led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’ is wrong.
Talking to Khabarhub, Bhattarai said the treatments shown by the government towards CK Raut, Resham Chaudhary and Biplav are different, questing whether they are inadvertent or premeditated.
“CK Raut had been advocating for a separate Madhesh state. The government, hastily inked an 11-point deal with Raut who had been serving a jail-term, said Bhattarai, adding, “Resham Chaudhary was sentenced to life in prison over his involvement in the Tikapur incident.”
Bhattarai, who is also the former prime minister, openly objected to the government’s decision to ban the Biplav-led NCP for carrying out any further activities in the days ahead.
“It is wrong to put a ban on the activities of the Biplav-led NCP at a time when the party was launching a movement with extremist communist agendas,” Bhattarai said, suggesting dialogues as the best option to resolve the issue.
The government should take Biplav’s wrong activities among the people through political discourse rather than prohibiting his activities, added Bhattarai.
KATHMANDU: Senior leader of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) Madhav Kumar Nepal said the party would not take responsibility for the cabinet’s decision to prohibit the Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’-led party’s activities.
Talking to Khabarhub, Nepal informed that the government did not consult the NCP while taking the decision. “The decision to ban the activities of Biplav-led party was taken by the government unilaterally. Hence, the part will not be responsible for any consequences to be resulted in by the decision.
Meanwhile, Nepal urged the government not to take any decisions in haste and hold talks with concerned parties prior to making any decisions.
“It is the duty of the government to maintain law and order in the country,” added Nepal.
KATHMANDU: President Bidya Devi Bhandari held meetings with high level officials in New York (NY) yesterday in terms of attending the 63rd session of the Commission of the Status of Women (CSW-63).
The President held a meeting with António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations at his office. During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on issues, including multilateralism, Climate Change, SDGs, peacekeeping, and post-earthquake reconstruction, according to the Nepal’s Permanent Mission to UN in New York.
At the meeting the Secretary-General recalled his first visit to Nepal in 1978, and appreciated Nepal for playing an active role at the UN, including through contributions in peacekeeping missions.
Likewise, President met with María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, the PGA, and appreciated her for taking leadership on important issues, including through organizing the event, ‘Women in Power.’
The President also held separate bilateral meetings with the President of Estonia, Kersti Kaljulaid and the President of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović.
During the meeting with the Estonian counterpart, the two sides discussed pressing global issues such as climate change and sustainable development among others.
Similarly, during her meeting with the President of Croatia, matters of mutual interests, including women in political leadership, were discussed. In both the meetings, the leaders expressed satisfaction over the warm bilateral relations while exchanging views on ways to enhance them.
The President attended a dinner hosted in her honour by Ambassador, Amrit Bahadur Rai, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the United Nations at his official residence.
Also on the same day, the President attended a high-level luncheon with ‘Young Women Leaders’ jointly hosted by the PGA and the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations.
President Bhandari is scheduled to leave New York for Kathmandu on Thursday and arrive in the capital on 15th March.
