Prime Minister applies for 10,000 shares of Trishuli ‘B’ Published on: March 21, 2019

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has bought 10,000 shares of the Trishuli ‘B’ under the People’s Hydropower Program.

At a program organized by the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, Oli applied for 10,000 shares of the Hydropower project. Similarly, his wife Radhika Shakya also applied for the same ratio of shares.

Transport resumption brings cheers to Karnali locals Published on: March 21, 2019

BAJURA: Transportation is beginning at Bajura section of the Karnali corridor. The District Administration Office here informed that the 35-km road from Laifu to Lebdi, which is a part of the Karnali corridor, is coming into operation on Thursday.

The locals here have been elated after news of the transportation along the local roadway. The roadway also benefits the people from Humla and Mugu districts.

The Nepal Army has been constructing the 285 km long corridor.

Holi festival begins in Tarai Published on: March 21, 2019

RUPANDEHI: The Holi,  festival of colors, is being celebrated with much fanfare in the Tarai districts including Rupandehi exchanging greetings and  happiness on Thursday.

Various organizations organized programs here this morning to exchange greetings on this occasion. Federation of Nepali Journalists district chapter gathered journalists and well wishers to share the message of happiness and harmony.

Different colors are used in Holi. The revelers smear the colors on each others’ faces exuding jubilation. Yellow is the favorite color of the Lord Bishnu and Lord Shree Krishna, while blue is taken as the symbol of holy war. Similarly, it is believed that Lord Ganesh loves all kinds of colors and the red one is symbol of power and good fortune.

Holi is given high importance in the southern plains- Tarai- of the country. It is observed as victory of justice over injustice.

Foreigners coming to Nepal on student visa soar Published on: March 21, 2019

KATHMANDU:  The number of foreigners coming to Nepal on student visa has increased significantly. The number of foreigners who came to Nepal on student visa went up by 55 percent in 2018, according to a report in Naya Patrika.

A total of 2,016 tourists ( except Indian nationals) had come to Nepal on student visa in 2018, while the number of foreigners coming to Nepal through the same visa process was 1,200 in 2017.

According to Ishwor Raj Paudel, director general  at the  Department of Immigration,  foreigners coming to Nepal on student visa might be involved in other activities, too. The concerned authority should monitor them, Pudel added.

Most of those coming to Nepal on student visa are from European and American countries.

2,000 die in road mishap annually Published on: March 21, 2019

KATHMANDU: Around 2,000 people lose their lives in road accidents across the country annually, according to a record maintained by the traffic police.

A total of 2,318 people had died in road accidents last year while the number of casualties due to the same cause had been put at 2, 384 two years ago, a report in Kantipur daily said.

Poor condition of roads, negligence and lack of awareness on the part of the users are attributed to the road accidents.

According to Jayaprakash Sapkota, spokesperson of Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, 80 percent of road accidents are caused by human error while the 20 percent of them are attributed to technical glitches.

Police intensify operation against Biplav outfit Published on: March 21, 2019

KATHMANDU: Police have intensified their operation after the government put a ban on the Nepal Communist Party led by Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav).

Nepal Police headquarters, Naxal has directed its subordinate  bodies to focus operation on these areas, Nagarik daily has reported.

Police have launched a controlled delivery and undercover operation against Biplav cadres in the hills districts, where the outfit has been centering its activities. A police team led by SP Somendra Singh Rathor of Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) on Tuesday night also adopted the same method to nab two Biplav cadres in Kavre district.

 

 

Nepal 3rd happiest country in S Asia: UN report Published on: March 20, 2019

Pakistan has left behind other South Asian nations on the list of the world’s happiest countries, according to the United Nations report.

According to the global happiness survey from the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Pakistan is the happiest nation in South Asia followed by Bhutan. Pakistan, however, stands 67th happiest country in the world.

The report says Nepal, which ranks 100th in the world, is the third happiest country in South Asia.

The UN published the report on the happiest countries on the eve of the International Happiness Day which is celebrated on March 20 every year.

Finland has ranked as the world´s happiest country for the second year. The war-torn South Sudan sank to the least contented in The Nordic nation of 5.5 million people.

Other Nordic countries, such as the Netherlands, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, and New Zealand made the top ten.

Meanwhile, the United States is in the 19th place, the report said.

South Sudan is the unhappiest nation, according to the report, where the UN recently said 60 percent of people face food insecurity following a bloody civil war which has claimed the lives of an estimated 400,000 people. (Agencies)

Trauma Centre gets new executive director Published on: March 20, 2019

KATHMANDU: National Trauma Centre has appointed Dr Pramod Yadav as its Executive Director.

The Centre is operated under the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health and Population, Upendra Yadav appointed the 10th level senior general surgeon Dr Yadav to the post through a ministerial decision, the DPM’s secretariat has stated.

Likewise, Prof DN Saha was appointed to the post of Dean of NAMS on March 14.

IGP Khanal off to Thailand Published on: March 20, 2019

KATHMANDU: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sarbendra Khanal left here for Thailand today to take part in the third security officials’ meeting of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical Economic Cooperation).

He is leading the Nepali delegation to the two-day meeting starting on Thursday. Others in the delegation include Deputy Inspector General of Armed Police Force, Khadga Bahadur Rai, National Investigation Department’s investigation director Laxman Gurung, and section officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) Somesh Thapa.

Agendas of discussion in the meeting include terrorism, smuggling of arms and ammunition and human trafficking issues, drugs peddling, among others.
