The cabinet meeting to be held today is likely to decide on the postponement of the November elections as recommended by all the major political parties at the end of an all-party meeting Sunday.
Representatives of the major political parties- Nepali Congress, Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist), Nepali Congress (Democratic), Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Nepal Sadbhawana Party, Nepal Workers’ and Peasants Party (NWPP) and Janmorcha Nepal recommended to Prime Minister Deuba that it was virtually not feasible to hold the elections in the prevailing security situation.
Leaders of the Nepali Congress, Janmorcha Nepal and NWPP had viewed that they would not have any objections even if the dissolved House of Representatives was restored for the sake of addressing the present political crisis in the country.
The new Congress party led by Deuba had stood against the idea of restoring the House. No discussions were held on forming an all-party government at the meeting. Nevertheless, the CPN (UML), RPP and Nepal Sadbhawana party have expressed their desire to join an all-party government led by Prime Minister Deuba.
Constitutional experts have said that going by the earlier precedent, the Prime Minister can recommend to the King for the postponement of elections under special circumstances.
