Bomb scare across valley, no casualties

Kathmandu:Bombs and explosives hanging from banners created alarm at seven different places of Kathmandu Valley today. However, no untoward incident happened after police and army personnel disarmed and defused them.

According to the district police office of Bhaktapur, there were such bombs wrapped with pieces of clothes and hung from the banner with slogans at two different places of Bhaktapur at Bansagopal and Bhulungkhel. The police said that the bombs were defused by the police and army personnel. Police said there were some explosives and lead pellets.

According to Shyam Poudel, inspector at the Bhaktapur District Police, there were also banners hung from the poles and containing sack which looked like bombs at Ghatthaghar and Sallaghari of Bhaktapur.

Similarly in Patan also, seven bombs of different sizes were found hung from the banner at Nakambahil of Patan.

Deputy Superintendent of the Patan District Police Deepak Ranjitkar said four of them were a little powerful and the three were ordinary type. All the bombs were also defused and disabled by the police.

Likewise, people had panicked after seeing several sacks hanging from a banner tied to two electric poles near Gramin Adarsha Campus in Balaju. But the army personnel who tried to defuse them found that they contained only sawdust.

A police patrol found an effigy, about two feet long and made of a red piece of cloth, hung from a tree near Gyaneshwor in Kathmandu. But police experts found it did not contain any explosive. With the finding of such bombs and explosives in the city, people have expressed concern over the lack of police’s vigilance.

Meanwhile, a report from our Nawalparasi correspondent said panic and fear was set throughout the Nawalpur bazaar of Daldale after bomb were found on the banners today. People informed the police after finding a banner containing slogans and a bomb at a resting-place, named Madan-Ashrit resting-place.

A police team led by DSP Kamal Bhandari, had defused the bomb. However, fear continued among the people throughout the day. People looked agitated against the Maoists after the bomb scare.
